Jason Scrivener Wins 2007 Australian Junior Amateur Championship
Jason Scrivener has taken out the 2007 Australian Boys Amateur Championship with a two stroke win over Danny An at Cottesloe Golf Club in Perth. The 17-year old now joins the elite company of Adam Scott, Stuart Appleby and Robert Allenby who are all former champions of the prestigious junior event.
Scrivener was equal third, just one shot off the pace going into today’s third and fourth rounds but a solid 69 this morning saw the 17-year old rocket to the top of the leader board at seven-under, one stroke ahead of Lincoln Tighe.
Scrivener maintained his form throughout the afternoon, shooting an even par 72 to run out a deserved winner ahead of An and Yeon Jin Jeong who made a late charge with a superb final round 68. Exciting youngster Daniel Nisbet also shot a final round 68 to finish equal-fourth along with New South Welshman Alex Katholos.
The 17-year old started his final round in magnificent fashion with a birdie but a bogey followed soon after as he dropped ever closer to the chasing pack. A double bogey on the par-four 12th was cause for concern, but Scrivener re-grouped and eagled the par-five 14th to put himself on track for victory.
Conditions were perfect for golf as a sizeable gallery followed the last group throughout the final round culminating with 200 people surrounding the 18th as Scrivener putted his way to the championship.
Today’s win at Cottesloe was the first significant title in Scrivener’s blossoming career. The Mandurah Senior College student claimed the New Zealand U19 Amateur Championship in Hamilton last year but this is a giant step forward for the talented teen. Scrivener is also just the third West Australian to win the title and the first since Rick Kulacz triumphed in 2001.
Winning in Perth in front of a gallery of family and friends was the icing on the cake for Scrivener. It was also a chance for the 17-year old to finally go one step further after so many near misses.
“It was really special to win in my home state and it was also a relief to finally shake the bridesmaid tag and win the most prestigious junior event in the country,” he said.
The Western Australian Junior State Team Captain attributed his win to hard training over the past year and a vast improvement in his short game. Scrivener also noted that his selection in the Australian Junior Team for the World Junior Teams Championship in Japan later this year also acted as a significant motivator.
