Official Handicaps For Social Players
Can’t afford to join a club? Prefer to play at many different courses rather than predominately at one? Want a nationally recognised Australian handicap so you can play in some of those competitions you read about?
Then Golf Access might be for you.
Golf Access is an initiative of Golf Australia. It provides an opportunity for social golfers to participate more fully in golf competitions and also assists and supports golf clubs through a variety of nationally coordinated club development initiatives.
Social golfers joining Golf Access receive the following benefits:
- A Golf Australia Handicap, administered through GOLF Link and giving access to various golf competitions and providing a monitor of your progress.
- Golf Australia’s Player Insurance Coverage, through Sportscover, which includes cover for loss and damage of clubs, personal liability and personal accident insurance.
- Access to Rules books, general information and a GOLF Link Card.
Cost is $99 per year with a pro-rata amount payable depending on when you join.
If you are interested in joining the program, see the Join A Club page at the Golf Access website.
The Victorian Golf Association has a list of courses you can nominate as home courses.
In NSW see the NSW Golf Association.
If anyone can find a link on the Golf Queensland site, let me know and I will update this post.
South Australia and Western Australia seem to miss out entirely.
I actually signed up today and nominated Goonawarra as my “home” course.

Its a great idea. The other option is to join a club thats attached to a public course. I am a member of the Growling Frog Golf Club that plays out of the Growling Frog course. Costs about the same as Golf Access and provides a full Golf Link handicap, and regular competitions, Club Championships etc.
Didn’t realise Growling Frog was that cheap, otherwise I would have joined there!
Goonawarra is somewhere in the region of $900 which is why I just went for the Golf Access option. Might look at joining Growling Frog sometime.
Thanks for that.
need a handicap, play 10 times a year, can play to 18, but would like to play in comps on the central coast NSW, and the northern beaches NSW.
I am 32 years of age, and keen.
The only place in NSW appears to be Warringah Golf Club GAA Centre in North Manly, otherwise there should be a locla club you can join for a couple of hundred dollars a year.
Do you know of any of these course/clubs that I can gain a handicap through cheaply at the Gold Coast, preferably so that I can then play comps at a number of the courses there?
Hi Poit, unfortunately I have no idea. Had a look around on the Queensland site again, and there’s nothing there. Possibly send them an email?
Head over to OzGolf (ozgolf.net/forums) and have a hunt through the forum. Most of the members are Queenslanders, and are very helpful.
Hope this helps.
