2007 Federal Amateur Open - Day 2

Cal on September 29th, 2007

Here we have another tournament with a Friday start confusing me no end!

Media release from the Federal Golf Club:

The Australian and International amateur golfers faced ‘somewhat’ kinder conditions during the second of the Federal Amateur Open and this led to better scoring overall. The field has now been ‘cut’ with those players with a score of 154 or better progressing through to the final two rounds on Sunday and Monday.

WA state squad member Brenton Haines had a very good 69 (3-under par) to move to the top of the leader board on 142 and Haines said “ that he was very happy with the way he hit the ball today and on the greens, even though the cold and windy conditions still made it challenging”. Andre NA (Grange GC, SA) had another consistent round of 70 (2 under par) to join Haines at the top of the leader board as well as Luke Bleumick (Heritage GC) who had a two under par 70 to add to his overnight 72.

There are a group of players chasing Haines and Na, including Brendon Smith who had a one under par 71 to be on 143 with Daniel Beckman (VIC) who also had a 71. English amateur golfer, Dale Whitnell who followed up his first round 71 with a one over par 73 to be on 144. He is joined 2 shots behind the leader on 144 by
Ryan Macarthy (TAS).

Federal Golf Club General Manager, Chris Hume said “the lighter winds made scoring easier than on the first day and with the field reduced by half for the last 2 rounds the championship is well set up for a number of players over the last 2 rounds”.

Previous winners of the Open include Rick Kulacz (2006), Andrew Martin (2005),Gavin Flint (2004), Nick Flanagan (2003) and Andrew McKenzie (2002).
