Club Fitting – Part 1

Are you looking to get some new clubs soon? Now is a good time to start your search so you are prepared for when the sales come ’round in July.

Part of getting new clubs is to have them fitted, or go to a demo day to try them out. The advantages of a demo day at a driving range is that you can see what your ball flight is like when hitting the ball. Some indoor centres have launch monitors which then show you your ball flight on a computer screen, however there is nothing like seeing the real thing.

Drummond Golf have their Club Fitting system where they measure your swing speed, see what your budget is and recommend a few manufacturers/clubs. You then hit a few balls with a 6 iron from each recommendation. The advantages with their system is they measure you up for height and swing speed, and for the average golfer that’s pretty much all you need. It is also free! The disadvantage is that you hit balls into a net and have no idea what your ball flight looks like (well the Southland store where I went only has a net and no computer screen).

For the average golfer that is pretty bad as you really need to see what the clubs will do to your game. Will you still slice the ball with the new clubs, or is the offset too much and you end up pulling the ball?

In future entries I will look at manufacturers who do the full club fitting experience.
