Blowing A Gale

Cal on February 13th, 2007

It’s taken me a couple of days to get over it, so I thought I would post about my golf on the weekend…

For those of you who don’t know (almost everyone?), I’m a member of the Mulgrave Country Club, and handicapper for their Golf Section. We play once a month at various courses around the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Sunday was the day for playing at Waterford Valley. it was also the first Matchplay round for the year.

The original forcast was for sunny and 30 degrees (Celcius that is). this was later changed to “a bit of rain in the morning with a top of 26″. Well it did rain in the morning but that had cleared off by the time we teed off at 8:30.

What happened over the next 6 hours (yes you read that right) was sheer hell! (I was playing in Knox and I live near Moorabbin!). The wind got up to 60 odd kilometres an hour and stayed pretty much at that speed. Gusts were up to 80km/hr. Drives were going 180m into the wind. 7 irons were going 200m with the wind. Putts were being blown offline, balls were being blown off tees and you really had to brace yourself to stay upright. You would regularly get sand blasted from bunkers 50m away. Shots had to be aimed 40 to 60m off target to allow for the wind and even then you couldn’t guarantee the lineas a gust could (and often did) play havoc with the ball.

I ended up losing 6 balls, shooting 100 off the stick (possible sub 90 round went begging as a result), and winning a ball for nearest the pin on the 200m par 3 13th.

Oh, and I lost the matchplay 4 and 3.
